Sleek, shining scales which gleam-like polished glass… a hoard of gold… and of course, a mouth to breathe fire hotter than the surface of the sun. For centuries, the mythical dragon has long fascinated authors, painters, poets and writers, and their image can be seen throughout art and literature. From the fearsome sea creatures of Ancient Greece, to the sinister serpents of the Middle East, this is a beast that has been interpreted and displayed in a host of different ways.
The time has come, then, for you to put your own spin on these legendary lizards, and learn how to draw your very own incredible fire breathing dragon – if you dare…
1.
Begin by making a mark almost in the dead center of your page with a black pen. Start with a small semi-circle, with a slight horizontal curve at the bottom. On the right hand side of this horizontal line, draw another small line, curving slightly. Essentially, this should look almost like a backwards capital letter "Z", but with the top half reaching up, rather than straight across.

Now it is time to add some spines; go to the bottom of your "backwards Z", and draw a series of zig-zags – around 4 – curving around in a semi-circle shape, and growing smaller as you reach the bottom of the curve.

Return to the top of your "backwards Z", and move your pencil to the tip of the top line – remember, this is heading upwards. Draw another mark reaching out in a horizontal line from this point, with both ends curled under slightly.

At the end of this new horizontal line, draw a line with small bumps – three in total, heading out horizontally to the left.

The head of your dragon is starting to take shape! At the end of the bumpy line, draw a shape that looks like a capital "C", but add a few wiggles and lumps – almost as if you were drawing it with your non-writing hand.

From the bottom of this capital "C", draw another bumpy line, just like before, this time moving horizontally to the right – it should be parallel with the bumpy line above it. Stop the line just before your zig-zags on the right.

Next, move to the end of the bumpy line you just created. And draw a long, wavy line moving horizontally to the left of this. When you are about level with the "C" shape you created earlier, follow the line down slightly, and then back across to the right. Make sure the lines are wavy, and grow wider as you reach the zig-zag line. These are your dragon's jaws.

Now is time to add some detail; add a few small marks to the bottom line of the top jaw, and the top line of the bottom jaw. Make sure they are pointed and spaced fairly close together.

Add a few small, vertical marks to the larger area of the lower jaw – these can be quite randomly placed. Then, return to the top jaw, and draw a wavy line in the wider space to the right.

Beneath this wavy line, draw a small semi-circle, curving the edges up so that they meet the wavy line. Can you see the eye beginning to take shape?

Inside this semi-circle, add another, smaller circle, and fill this in almost completely, except for a tiny pinprick of white.

Now add some details beneath the eye; start in the bottom left hand corner of the eye, and draw out curved stokes all around the shape, growing longer as you get further from the eye.

Draw a curve over the eye, and make this nice and thick – you want your dragon to look fierce!

Move back to the lower jaw, and put your pencil around halfway across – roughly at the point where the jaw begins to get wider. From here, draw a wavy line downwards, and add another, shorter line nestled just to the right of the first curve.

Draw another line parallel to this first one, keeping it narrow at the top, and gradually widening as you move downwards. Add a series of small lines, pointing upwards at around a 45 degree angle, along the length of the left hand line – these are your scales – and add a slightly wavy horizontal line to the bottom, heading right.

Return to the scales, adding a little more length and width to them so that they really stand out.

Now return to the zig-zag shapes you made earlier, and carefully connect each of the points together, so that you have a "web" shape, with the points inside.

Move to the very top of the head, where you will see a small half circle – like a lump. Move to the halfway point of this lump, and draw one straight line up to a 45 degree angle. Beneath this, draw another, slightly curved and smaller line.

Time to turn those lines into horns! Let's start with that small, wavy line you just made – turn this into a triangle shape, with the right hand side curved every so slightly inwards. Next, move to the lump just above the eye – the top of the "Z shape" you started with – and draw two parallel lines heading straight up from the middle, at a 45 degree angle. Take the edges of these lines right off the page.

Now return to that second 45 degree line, and add another parallel line to go alongside it. Again, take the ends off the edge of the page, gradually narrowing to a point as you do so.

Add some hatching to the horns; you can just draw straight across them at even intervals.

Now return to the horizontal wavy line right at the bottom of your drawing. Leaving around half an inch (1.3 cm) from the right hand end of the line, draw a wavy line straight up to meet the "web".

Take the line you just drew, and add "flame" shapes all along the length – these are the spikes of your dragon!

Dragons need fierce teeth, so add some small triangles to the lower jaw – make sure they are sharp!

Move to the very back of the mouth, where the two jaws meet, and add a slight curve around half an inch (1.3 cm) to the left, joining the two sections – this is the throat of your dragon. Add two small marks to the top jaw.

Add some sharp, fearsome teeth to the top jaw…

And then a jet of flame emerging from the mouth!

Add a little detail to your flame, by drawing small curved shapes all around the main flame.

Your dragon needs some nostrils; add a small upside down teardrop shape to the bottom of the nose, with two small, wavy lines to the top and bottom of this.

Now is your chance to add some color; start by adding a bright red shade to the throat of the dragon with a red-colored pencil…

And the same bright red to the spines and the top horn.

You can also shade the outer flames the same scarlet color, and add a ring of color to the outline of the main flame.

Inside this red line, draw another line of vibrant orange with an orange-colored pencil.

You can also add the orange to the web shape we created earlier.

Add shades to the end of the spines and to the web shape by using a brown-colored pencil.

Fill in the middle of your flame with a yellow shade – feel free to blend the orange and yellow together for a real flame effect! Use a yellow-colored pencil for this step.

Add some orange to the scales on the front of your dragon's chest with the orange-colored pencil…

And blend this slightly with a red tone for a textured and detailed final look.

Now add a yellow tone to the horns…

And a touch of green along the bottom line of the upper jaw with a green-colored pencil.

Make sure the teeth stand out by coloring them a bright, eye-catching yellow pencil.

And then add some dark green color to the bottom line of the lower jaw with the green-colored pencil, straight across beneath the head, and down the right hand side of the neck.
43.
Finally, fill in the rest of the shape with a lighter green pencil, and go back to add darker tones or highlights as you choose.
